These pigments are produced by specialised cells called melanocytes, located deep within the hair follicle.

Dr. Joe explains:

“Specific cells at the base of the follicle (the hair bulb), called melanocytes, produce melanin pigments which are released directly into hair keratinocytes which eventually harden and become the hair shaft."

And here’s the important part many people don’t realise:
“Melanin goes through significant pigmentation changes throughout a person’s life.”

In other words: natural hair colour is not fixed forever.

That’s why many children born with bright blonde hair gradually become darker blonde, light brown, or brunette as they move through puberty and adulthood.

Why Blonde Hair Often Darkens With Age

One of the biggest misconceptions is that blonde hair “disappears.” It doesn’t. What usually happens is that the balance of pigment changes over time.

Children naturally produce less eumelanin (the darker pigment). As the body matures, melanocyte activity often increases—especially during puberty—which means more darker pigment begins mixing into the hair strand.
The result? Blonde hair slowly appears deeper, ashier, or browner.

This shift is heavily influenced by genetics. If darker hair exists elsewhere in your family line, your hair follicles may essentially be genetically programmed to produce more eumelanin over time.

Blonde hair is especially reactive because pheomelanin is less stable under UV exposure. But here’s the paradox:

Short-term sun exposure can temporarily brighten blonde hair… while chronic UV damage can eventually make blonde hair look duller, rougher, and darker because the cuticle becomes damaged and less reflective.
