Sulphates, like sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS) and sodium laureth sulphate, are synthetic detergents originally developed for laundry and historically used in shampoos.
They create a lathering effect in shampoos but can be harsh on hair, stripping away natural oils and causing the hair cuticle to swell, leading to dryness and damage.
