What are silicones?

The type of silicones used in personal care formulas are synthetic ingredients derived from silica.

They are found in many hair formulas for their ability to create a silky texture, slip, and shine. They coat the hair's surface, helping with frizz control and delivering glossy shine.

Read more about silicones with our guide.

Should I use silicone-free hair products?

Silicones can provide major benefits and high-performance results in conditioning products, masks and defrizzing formulas that you apply on hair strands.

It is, however, advisable to avoid shampoos or scalp treatments that contain silicones because these types of products are massaged directly onto your scalp.

When buying shampoos, check the ingredient list for names ending in "-cone," like dimethicone, or "-siloxane." These are silicones that could cause unwanted build-up on your scalp when you use shampoo formulas that contain them.
